The proposed Neopolis IT township project in Thiruvananthapuram is expected to witness a delay after the Union government initiated a comprehensive review of the urban development scheme under which it was shortlisted. The Centre has reportedly expanded the scope of the programme from an initial 10 cities to nearly 100 cities across India, necessitating a fresh evaluation of all previously shortlisted proposals.

The Neopolis project had received in-principle approval in late 2024 and was planned as a landmark mixed-use urban development at Technopark Phase IV. Positioned as a major component of the city’s long-term growth strategy, the township is expected to play a crucial role in decongesting the urban core while promoting development in peripheral regions.

The project forms part of the Outer Area Growth Corridor initiative, which aims to create balanced urban expansion and support the growing demand for commercial and residential infrastructure around Kerala’s capital city. However, the Centre’s decision to revise the scheme framework has introduced uncertainty over project timelines, as state authorities now await updated guidelines and selection criteria.

Officials associated with the Capital Regional Development Programme, which is serving as the consultant for the project, have indicated that the proposal will now be aligned with the revised national framework. This reassessment is expected to cover project scope, land use, infrastructure integration and compliance requirements.

The Neopolis township has been envisioned as an integrated ecosystem combining premium IT office spaces, residential developments, retail zones, hotels and recreational facilities. It is also expected to complement the growth of Technopark by creating additional capacity for technology firms in sectors such as artificial intelligence, robotics, data analytics and the Internet of Things.

Despite the delay, officials remain optimistic about Thiruvananthapuram’s prospects, citing its strong IT ecosystem, skilled workforce and existing infrastructure advantage. Once the Union government finalises the revised framework, the project is expected to move forward with renewed momentum.
