Madurai Airport has officially been granted international airport status, marking a significant milestone for southern Tamil Nadu’s aviation connectivity. The long-awaited announcement comes nearly 16 years after the airport was first declared a customs airport in 2010, enabling limited international operations.
With the new status, Madurai Airport will now be able to operate flights to a wider range of international destinations beyond its current services to Colombo, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The development is expected to strengthen regional connectivity, boost tourism, and support trade and business travel across the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
Airport authorities say the existing infrastructure is already capable of handling international operations. The airport currently has a runway length of 2,285 metres, which is suitable for aircraft such as the Airbus A321. The facility also includes 12 aircraft parking bays and a CAT-I Instrument Landing System that supports safer landings during low visibility conditions.
The integrated terminal building, which covers an area of about 17,560 square metres, can handle around 1,230 passengers during peak hours. This includes capacity for approximately 314 international passengers. Facilities such as customs clearance, immigration services, airport health organisation units and plant quarantine systems are already available, making the airport equipped for expanded international services.
To support future growth, the Airports Authority of India has proposed the construction of an additional terminal dedicated exclusively to international passengers. Planning and design work for the new terminal has already been completed, and the facility is expected to be ready within the next two years.
Another major proposal involves extending the runway from the present 2,285 metres to 3,810 metres. Once completed, the extended runway will allow larger wide-body aircraft, including models like the Airbus A350, to operate from Madurai.
The international status is expected to accelerate economic activity in the region by improving global connectivity for industries, tourism operators and exporters. For Madurai and surrounding districts, the upgrade represents a long-awaited step towards stronger international aviation links and broader economic opportunities.
