The proposed Visakhapatnam Metro Rail project is set to play a crucial role in transforming urban mobility in Andhra Pradesh’s largest coastal city. Planned with four corridors spanning a total length of 76.7 kilometres, the metro system aims to address the long term transportation needs of Visakhapatnam while supporting the city’s growing economic and urban development.
According to officials, the project has been designed not only as a mass rapid transit system but also as an integrated infrastructure initiative that improves overall road connectivity. A key feature of the project is the development of flyovers along National Highway 16, one of the busiest transport corridors passing through the city.
Authorities have proposed the construction of 12 flyovers at major junctions along NH-16 to streamline both passenger and freight traffic. These flyovers are expected to significantly reduce congestion and improve the movement of vehicles across the city’s key commercial and industrial zones.
The metro plan also includes a unique metro-cum-four-lane road flyover concept along sections of NH-16. This integrated approach will combine metro rail infrastructure with road transport facilities, allowing efficient use of urban space while improving traffic flow.
Officials say the initiative will help create a modern transportation network that supports Visakhapatnam’s long term growth as a major industrial and port city. Improved connectivity is expected to benefit commuters, logistics operators, and businesses operating across the region.
Meanwhile, the state government is also pushing forward plans for the Vijayawada Metro Rail project, which will include three corridors covering 66.20 kilometres. The Vijayawada system is expected to follow a similar approach by integrating metro infrastructure with existing highway flyovers to enhance connectivity.
Infrastructure experts believe that such projects will help reduce travel time, improve transport efficiency, and support regional economic development. With rapid urbanisation and increasing traffic volumes, integrated metro and road infrastructure solutions are becoming essential for cities like Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada.
Once implemented, the Vizag Metro project is expected to reshape the city’s public transport ecosystem while easing traffic pressure on key highways and urban corridors.
