Maduravoyal–Chennai Port Expressway to Feature Double-Layer Elevated Corridor

The long-pending Maduravoyal–Chennai Port Expressway project is finally taking visible shape, offering much-needed relief to Chennai’s strained urban transport network. Spanning 20.9 kilometres, the expressway is being developed as a modern elevated corridor that will provide seamless connectivity between Maduravoyal and the Chennai Port, significantly improving freight and passenger movement across the city.

One of the key features of the project is the introduction of a double-layer elevated road section near Padi Kuppam. According to officials, this configuration has been adopted to optimise limited urban space while ensuring smoother traffic flow along one of Chennai’s most congested stretches. The design allows for better segregation of port-bound cargo traffic and city-bound vehicles, reducing travel time and improving road safety.

In the initial stretch between Vanagaram and Koyambedu, covering about 5.7 kilometres, the expressway will operate as a single-level elevated road. Existing pillars constructed during the earlier phase of the project in 2008 are being retrofitted and strengthened for reuse, helping expedite execution while minimising environmental impact. Beyond this section, the corridor transitions into a double-layer elevated structure to accommodate higher traffic volumes.

The National Highways Authority of India is implementing the project with a focus on long-term urban mobility and logistics efficiency. Once completed, the expressway is expected to play a critical role in decongesting arterial city roads, particularly those leading to the Chennai Port, which handles a substantial share of the region’s cargo movement.

Urban planners and infrastructure experts believe the project will also have a positive ripple effect on real estate and commercial activity along the corridor. Improved connectivity is likely to enhance land values and attract new investments in western and northern parts of Chennai.

As Chennai continues to expand as a major industrial and logistics hub, the Maduravoyal–Chennai Port Expressway stands out as a strategic infrastructure project that aligns with the city’s long-term growth and mobility goals.
