The construction of Ramayapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh is moving at a brisk pace, with nearly 80 percent of Phase-I works now completed, marking a major milestone in the state’s coastal infrastructure push. Located in Prakasam district, the deep-sea port is emerging as a strategic logistics hub that is expected to significantly boost industrial and economic activity across southern Andhra Pradesh.
Developed at an estimated cost of about Rs 4,922 crore, the port is being built across nearly 2,000 acres near Chevuru in Gudluru mandal under the supervision of the Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board. Once operational, Ramayapatnam Port is expected to handle millions of tonnes of cargo annually, providing a strong alternative to congested ports such as Visakhapatnam and Chennai.
Infrastructure development at the port site has gained momentum over the past year. Two major breakwater berths have already been completed, improving marine safety and operational readiness. The connecting link road is in place, while about 20 percent of the railway line required for seamless cargo evacuation has also been completed. These developments are critical for ensuring efficient movement of goods between the port, industrial clusters and hinterland markets.
District Collector Rajababu recently reviewed the progress of land acquisition and construction works and expressed satisfaction with the speed of execution. According to officials, Phase-I of the project is on track for completion by April this year, paving the way for early operational activities.
Beyond port-led logistics, the project is expected to catalyse broader industrial growth in Prakasam and neighbouring Nellore districts. The proposed refinery project by BPCL, planned alongside the port, is seen as a game changer for the regional economy. Together, the port and refinery are expected to generate large-scale employment, attract ancillary industries and strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s position in India’s maritime and industrial landscape.
With strong government backing and steady progress on the ground, Ramayapatnam Port is shaping up as a long-term growth engine for the state, supporting trade, manufacturing and infrastructure-led development along the east coast.
