Jindal Steel and Power has announced a significant expansion of its manufacturing capabilities by tripling its annual heat treated plate capacity to seven lakh tonnes. The development marks one of the company’s most important manufacturing upgrades in recent years and reinforces its position as a leading supplier of high performance steel plates for critical industries in India and global markets.
The company’s enhanced facilities now allow production of plates ranging from six millimetres to 200 millimetres in thickness and up to five metres in width. This widened capability supports industries such as construction, heavy engineering, defence manufacturing, shipbuilding and the oil and gas sector, all of which rely on highly durable, precision engineered steel plates.
Jindal Steel and Power has been steadily expanding its presence in the specialised steel segment, especially in high strength, abrasion resistant and defence grade categories. According to SK Pradhan, Chief Marketing Officer of Jindal Steel, the company’s focus has been on anticipating emerging industry requirements and developing advanced products ahead of market demand. He noted that the company has successfully created fire resistant steel, a capability currently unmatched by any other steel manufacturer in India. This innovation adds further depth to the company’s portfolio and positions it strongly for defence and infrastructure related opportunities.
The expansion is also aligned with India’s larger goal of strengthening domestic manufacturing under the Make in India programme. As industries increasingly seek local sources for specialised steel, Jindal Steel and Power’s upgraded capacity offers an important boost to supply chain resilience. The company expects the enhanced production scale to support India’s export competitiveness as well, especially in markets where high grade plates are in demand.
In addition to increasing capacity, Jindal Steel and Power is advancing infrastructure projects including a dedicated port and slurry pipeline to streamline logistics and improve delivery timelines. These initiatives are expected to reduce transportation bottlenecks and further strengthen the company’s ability to meet large scale domestic and international orders.
With this expansion, Jindal Steel and Power positions itself to play a larger role in the country’s manufacturing ecosystem, while contributing to energy, infrastructure and defence sector growth.
