The National Highways Logistics Management Limited has initiated a major step toward expanding modern ropeway mobility in Tamil Nadu by inviting proposals from qualified technical consultants to prepare detailed project reports for six ropeway corridors across the state. This development marks a significant push under the Government of India’s Parvatmala Pariyojana programme, which aims to introduce ropeway-based transport systems in key tourist, spiritual and hilly regions.
The proposed corridors cover some of Tamil Nadu’s most visited and geographically challenging destinations. Among the important stretches identified are Parvathamalai near Tiruvannamalai, the Glenmorgan to Singara Power House ropeway route in Ooty, the Kurangani to Top Station corridor popular among trekkers, the Thoranamalai Murugan Temple stretch, and two corridors planned at the spiritually significant Sathuragiri Hills. Each of these routes has been selected based on tourism potential, terrain complexity and the need for improved last-mile connectivity.
The proposed ropeway lengths vary from 0.5 kilometres to 4.6 kilometres, enabling engineers and consultants to design solutions that balance environmental protection, engineering feasibility and passenger safety. The detailed project reports are expected to include comprehensive surveys, alignment design, station planning, traffic assessment, environmental impact analysis, cost estimation and construction timelines. These DPRs will serve as the blueprint for tendering and future execution.
With Tamil Nadu recording strong tourism growth and several hill regions facing access constraints, ropeway corridors are being increasingly viewed as efficient, sustainable and safe mobility options. The Parvatmala Pariyojana programme, driven by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, aims to reduce travel time, ease congestion on narrow hill roads and create new economic opportunities for local communities.
If implemented, these ropeway projects could transform connectivity in regions that currently rely on steep, winding roads or physically demanding trekking paths. The initiative also aligns with India’s push toward eco-friendly transport solutions that minimise land disturbance and carbon emissions.
By inviting DPR bids, NHLML has set the stage for Tamil Nadu to emerge as a leading state in ropeway infrastructure development, providing both pilgrims and tourists with safer, faster and more scenic access to the state’s iconic hill destinations.
