Kochi Metro’s Pink Line to Redefine Urban Travel; Ridership Expected to Touch 50 Lakh Per Month

The upcoming 11.2-kilometre Pink Line of Kochi Metro, connecting JLN Stadium in Kaloor with Infopark in Kakkanad, is set to transform the city’s commuting landscape. Scheduled for commissioning next year, the new corridor is projected to draw nearly 20 lakh additional commuters every month, taking the total metro ridership to an estimated 50 lakh per month.

According to Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), this marks a major step forward in easing traffic congestion and promoting sustainable public transport. The first phase of Kochi Metro, covering 28.125 km from Aluva to Tripunithura, currently handles an average of 30 lakh commuters monthly and even achieved a record ridership of 34,10,250 in August 2025. With the addition of the Pink Line, the metro system’s capacity and connectivity are expected to expand significantly.

KMRL is targeting the partial opening of the first five stations—up to Padamugal—by June 2026, with the full Pink Line slated for completion by December 2026. However, final decisions regarding whether trains from Infopark will terminate at JLN Stadium or continue towards destinations such as Tripunithura are still pending, pending results of future traffic studies.

The Phase 2 construction, though progressing at a brisk pace, comes with notable engineering challenges, particularly the crossings over NH 66 at Palarivattom and the Aluva metro line near Kurishupally. KMRL engineers are working in close coordination with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to navigate these complexities, as the upcoming Edappally-Aroor elevated highway will pass 32 metres above the Palarivattom flyover and the metro viaduct.

Work on the Infopark corridor has already gained momentum, with 65 pillars completed and more than a thousand piles laid. The first U-girder was placed on October 24, symbolising a shift from groundwork to viaduct construction.

Once operational, the Pink Line will enhance connectivity between residential and IT hubs, reduce road congestion, and strengthen Kochi’s position as a model for modern urban transport in India.
