Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase II project along the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) is poised to significantly ease daily commutes in just two years. A standout feature of this expansion is the Sholinganallur station, which will function as a state-of-the-art elevated interchange, connecting Corridors 3 and 5 through a unique multi-level, plus-shaped design.
The station is being designed not just for transit but as a hub of urban activity. A plaza will occupy the first level, providing a space for passengers to gather, relax, and access retail services. Above this, a grade separator will facilitate smooth vehicular movement, while the third and fourth levels will house the platforms for Corridors 3 and 5 respectively. The Corridor 5 platform, at a height of 28.8 metres from the road, will feature a curved track that passes through the fifth floor of an adjacent eight-storey building. Corridor 3, slightly lower at 21.8 metres, will allow seamless boarding for commuters.
The eight-storey building next to the station will include parking on the first floor, while floors six to eight are planned for offices and retail spaces, creating a dynamic environment around the metro. Trains will pass through the building without stopping on the fifth floor, adding a futuristic touch to the station’s design.
According to T. Archunan, Director of Projects at Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), this design ensures that commuters can switch effortlessly between corridors, enhancing connectivity along OMR and reducing congestion on the roads. A similar design will be implemented at the nearby Thoraipakkam station, although transfers between corridors will only be possible at Sholinganallur.
With its modern design, elevated interchange, and integrated urban facilities, the Sholinganallur station is set to become a benchmark in metro infrastructure. It promises not only to reduce travel time but also to enhance the commuting experience for thousands of residents and office-goers along Chennai’s IT corridor.
