After years of anticipation, the Avadi–Guduvanchery broad-gauge railway line project has taken a significant step forward with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase-1 finally completed. This long-pending project, first sanctioned in 2013, is seen as a lifeline for commuters and industries across the northwestern and southern suburbs of Chennai.
The Phase-1 stretch will cover a distance of 33.78 kilometers and is estimated to cost around ₹945 crore. Once operational, the line will support trains running at speeds of up to 160 km/h, drastically reducing travel time and improving overall connectivity. The project will pass through Sriperumbudur, a fast-growing industrial hub, which is home to several multinational companies and large manufacturing units. With better rail access, both passenger movement and freight transport are expected to benefit.
Residents of Avadi, Sriperumbudur, and surrounding regions have been demanding improved rail connectivity for over a decade. Currently, these areas rely heavily on road transport, which is often congested due to the growing movement of goods and daily commuters. The new line aims to decongest roads and provide a sustainable, faster, and more reliable alternative.
Experts believe the Avadi–Guduvanchery line could transform suburban transit in Chennai. By linking the western and southern parts of the city, it will reduce dependence on the already crowded Chennai Beach–Tambaram–Chengalpattu and Chennai Central–Arakkonam lines. For industries, especially in Sriperumbudur and Oragadam, the railway line is expected to enhance logistics efficiency and boost economic activity in the region.
The project’s progress comes as a relief to residents who had nearly lost hope after years of delay. With the DPR now ready, authorities are expected to move toward land acquisition, tendering, and construction phases soon. If implemented efficiently, the Avadi–Guduvanchery railway line could emerge as one of the most impactful suburban rail projects for Chennai in the coming years, ensuring faster mobility, industrial growth, and reduced traffic congestion.
