Recently, Jindal Steel & Power, headed by Naveen Jindal, has gone ahead and flagged off its first continuous galvanizing line at the integrated steel plant at Angul in Odisha. This is part of a major investment to the tune of ₹3,400 crores, which is intended for the cold rolling milling complex, directly aimed at increasing high-margin value-added steel production.
The just-launched continuous galvanising line will produce galvanised and galvalume steel under the brands called Jindal Panther Galvanised and Zinkalume. These products are essentially developed for the major sectors such as appliances, automobiles, infrastructure, and construction.
An extremely proud milestone is how Chairman Naveen Jindal termed the inauguration in reaffirming the company’s commitment to providing high-quality steel for its diverse industrial applications.
Full hard, soft and skin-passed galvanised steel forms the collectivity of products in Jindal Panther Galvanised for applications like air conditioners, electrical panels, ducting systems, vehicle bodies, silos and more. Some of these materials are also used for the manufacture of pre-painted galvanized iron (PPGI) materials.
These products are generally known as Zinkalume or Galvalume, which were coated with a zinc-aluminium-silicon alloy, presenting better corrosion resistance and heat durability than conventional coatings. Applications of these products trace refrigerator backs, solar infrastructure applications, fuel tanks, and among several others, pre-painted galvalume (PPPL) products.
The line will also allow Jindal into the tube industry, silos, pre-engineered buildings, and various automotive underbody components utilizing thinner and high-strength HR galvanised coils.
The investment comes within the context of the industry’s change in focus wherein steelmakers are beginning to invest in downstream and value-added products to obtain better profit margins.
Jindal Steel plans, alongside such increments, to increase its crude steel production at the Angul operation from 6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 12 MTPA by the end of 2025.
