In a much-awaited action in the city, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will be constructing a second entry/exit at the OTA–Nanganallur Road metro station soon. The project, which was pending for close to ten years, will help enhance passenger access and is scheduled to be completed by 2026.
Unlike other stations on the 54-km Phase I and Phase I Extension corridor, OTA–Nanganallur Road station possesses only one entry/exit point on GST Road, towards Chennai Airport. This daily inconveniences commuters coming from the Alandur side by making them undertake lengthy detours or indulge in unsafe traffic offenses.
The construction of the second entry was delayed because of land ownership by the Officers Training Academy (OTA). Following negotiations between CMRL and OTA, the station was officially renamed OTA–Nanganallur Road in October 2023, signaling progress in resolving the land dispute.
“Work on the second entry/exit will begin in a few months,” a CMRL official confirmed. “It will include staircases, escalators, and elevators, and will connect to the station’s concourse and platform.”
Residents have welcomed the move. A. Ragavan, a regular commuter, said, “I lose at least 10 minutes every day due to the lack of an exit on the Alandur side. This new access point will save time and improve safety.”
Commuter safety has been a key concern, with some resorting to illegal crossings to avoid lengthy detours. “People sometimes drive on the wrong side of the road to save time, which is dangerous,” Ragavan added.
Akila Varadarajan, another Nanganallur resident, called for additional support beyond infrastructure. “A dedicated fleet of minibuses for last-mile connectivity is essential, especially for senior citizens. With autos being expensive, CMRL should step in,” she said.
Bids for the project have already been floated. The contract is expected to be awarded within three months, and the new access point will be operational by 2026, CMRL officials confirmed.
