The Tamil Nadu government has provided in-principle clearance for the new corridor of the Chennai Metro between Pattabiram and Koyambedu via the Outer Ring Road. The 21.76-km long corridor, with an estimated cost at 2025 prices of ₹9,928.33 crore, is meant to provide better connectivity to the city’s fast-developing west suburbs.
The network will comprise 19 stations, with notable stops at Ambattur Estate, Dunlop, OT, Thirumullaivoyal, Avadi, Hindu College, and Pattabiram. Three flyovers will also be built to provide ease of connectivity into the existing traffic system. The flyovers will cost ₹464 crore, and it will be an integral part of the total budget.
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) filed the detailed project report (DPR) of the corridor, which was given the go-ahead by the state government on April 28. The initial idea was to build a link between Koyambedu and Avadi, but after studies, the project was taken to Pattabiram to improve regional connectivity and enable growth in regions such as the Outer Ring Road and the ELCOT unit.
The project would be funded both with equity help from the Union government and with external loans from bilateral or multilateral agencies. The state government has now sent the DPR to the Centre for sanction and arrangements for funding.
The new Metro line is likely to be a major milestone in enhancing transport infrastructure and decongesting Chennai, especially to benefit commuters in the western suburbs.
