The Baldota Group has put out the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the first phase of its ₹54,000-crore integrated steel plant coming up in Koppal, Karnataka—this is a landmark decision in one of the state’s largest private industrial projects.
The footprint of the forthcoming industry in the first phase, which targets an annual production of 3.5 million tonnes of steel, is currently described in a report prepared by Pollution & Ecology Control Services, Nagpur.
Nagaraj N.B. Vice President, Baldota Steel Project Ltd (BSPL) reiterated the group’s commitment to green initiatives. “Every environmental aspect, no matter how minute, has been addressed in the design of the plant. We’ve made sure that the ecosystem and local communities are protected,” he said.
This plant has been built as per the stringent Air and Water pollution control norms of KSPCB and CPCB. Emission will be 50 mg/Nm³. Wastewater will be treated in septic tanks and soak pits to avoid contamination. The facility will lift 4,170 cubic metres of water per hour from the Tungabhadra Reservoir.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the project is its emphasis on clean energy. The project emphasizes energy efficiency and circular economy principles, with BSPLs focus being to produce 295 MW of power using waste gases and fuels.
Aside from environmental scrutiny, the project is predicted to serve as a growth driver for the local economy. With the world’s second-largest producer of crude steel intending to grow its output capacity by 100 million tonnes between now and 2030, near to the current 180 million tonnes, the Baldota facility, which will scale up to 10.5 MTPA at full capacity, is likely to account for around 10% of that national achievement.
It places Karnataka as a major player in the steel future of India but also aims for a balance between industrial ambition and environmental responsibility.”
