A forward step towards worker welfare in the construction industry was made by the government of Tamil Nadu, when they have proposed bringing in a master health checkup scheme for registered members of the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board. Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu declared this while proposing the 2025-2026 state budget. This reflects positively on the welfare and security support of workers by the government in the construction sector.

The plan will benefit 16.70 lakh registered workers who are aged 40 and above. The plan will especially target diagnosing and treating occupational diseases such as musculoskeletal disorders, which are prevalent in construction workers because of the physical nature of their work. The plan has been a long-standing wish of members of the welfare board, who have been requesting greater healthcare assistance for workers who are involved in hazardous occupations.

Early Diagnosis & Mobile Medical Care
Early diagnosis and treatment is one of the primary elements of the scheme, as it will help ensure that the workers are provided with medical treatment before their conditions become serious. Along with giving health checkups, the government also intends to increase mobile medical care units. The units will provide on-site health camps on the construction sites so that health services are brought closer to workers who may find it difficult to reach hospitals or clinics.
By taking medical facilities to the workplaces, the government hopes to identify and treat occupational diseases in their early stages. Most construction labourers experience chronic pain, musculoskeletal disorders, and other ailments due to long-term exposure to physically demanding work. The health camps will identify common occupational diseases and offer preventive treatment.

Encouraging Response from Labourers
A Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board official said the scheme has received a positive response from registered workers. The move has been welcomed by most workers, seeing it as a long-overdue measure to look after their well-being. The board has been getting requests for such a scheme for years and its implementation is likely to have a major bearing on the lives of construction workers in the state.

With construction being among the biggest employment sectors in Tamil Nadu, this health initiative is likely to enhance the general quality of life of the workers and their families. By putting their health first, the government is reaffirming its importance placed on worker welfare and social security.
