Tata Steel Limited has begun deploying electric vehicles (EVs) at its captive coal mines in Ramgarh, Jharkhand, in a major step towards sustainability. The push is also designed to both cut carbon emissions and save on operational costs, in line with the company’s overall environmental ambitions.
The first phase of the Jump Start project has already deployed 36 EVs for mine inspections and other necessary services, the company said in a statement on its website. Tata Steel had earlier launched 11 EVs that cumulatively reduced carbon emissions by 43 metric tonnes (mt). The company aims for an additional reduction of 127 mt of emissions from the latest expansion.
Tata Steel is also looking at the use of alternative fuels in addition to deploying EVs to further reduce its carbon footprint. There are trials for the adoption of liquefied natural gas (LNG) based dump trucks at its iron ore and coal mining locations including Jharia, Noamundi, Dhanbad, and West Singhbhum. If successful, the initiative would considerably upgrade the fitness of the company’s green mining efforts.
With industries across the globe transitioning to green options, Tata Steel’s adoption of cleaner technology is a reflection of its commitment to sustainable mining. The company is building a lighthouse for Indian mining in adopting carbon-conscious solutions through EVs and LNG-powered trucks.
