Tamil Nadu has rolled out a major initiative aimed at empowering construction workers with advanced skills and knowledge. State Labour Welfare and Skill Development Minister CV Ganesan on Monday inaugurated a large-scale upskilling programme that will benefit 50,000 members of the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board.
The state government has allocated Rs 45.21 crore for the initiative, which focuses on equipping labourers with the latest technologies, safety practices, and health awareness required for today’s construction sector. Each worker selected under the programme will undergo specialised training at reputed industries and training centres across Tamil Nadu. To support them during the training period, every participant will receive an incentive of Rs 5,600.
According to an official statement, the training will cover new equipment handling, modern construction methods, adherence to safety protocols at worksites, and steps to maintain personal health and wellness. By gaining these skills, workers are expected to increase both their productivity and earning capacity, thereby improving their quality of life.
Speaking at the launch, Minister CV Ganesan highlighted that the programme is not only about technical upgradation but also about ensuring worker safety and long-term sustainability in the labour force. “By empowering our workers with better knowledge and skills, we are strengthening both their future and the state’s construction sector,” he said.
In addition to launching the skill upgradation drive, the minister also handed over appointment orders to nine candidates who had successfully cleared the Tamil Nadu Public Service Recruitment Board (TNPSC) examination.
Tamil Nadu’s construction sector is one of the fastest-growing in the country, and this initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to developing a skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of large-scale infrastructure and housing projects.
With a strong emphasis on safety, technology, and career growth, the Rs 45.21 crore programme is expected to set a benchmark for worker welfare and skill development in the construction industry.
