Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu M.K. Stalin, on Monday, announced two new industrial estates, a high-tech IT Park, a humongous Sewage Treatment plant, and quite a few very important road & railway improvements in the city.

New Industrial Estates & IT Park:

With the Gangaikondan SIPCOT Industrial Growth Center nearing full capacity after TP Solar and Vikram Solar set up units, two new industrial estates will be developed. The first, spanning 2,200 acres, will be located at Marukaalkurichi near Nanguneri along the Tirunelveli-Kanniyakumari Highway. The second will cover 1,060 acres at Moolaikkaraipatti, about 20 km from Palayamkottai.

Additionally, an IT Park will be established in Perumalpuram on over 4 acres, including land previously used as an omnibus terminus and the site of a Sri Lankan refugee camp, which will be relocated with new housing provided.

Environmental & Infrastructure Initiatives:

Setup of a sewage treatment plant in Tirunelveli to contain severe pollution affecting the Tamirabharani River due to industrial and domestic sewage. Treated water from this plant will be repurposed for industrial use, reducing pollution and conserving water resources.

Addressing long-standing traffic congestion, a ‘Y’-shaped rail overbridge will be built at the Kulavanigarpuram level crossing. This design will provide seamless connectivity for residents of Melapalayam, Perumalpuram, and nearby areas, replacing the previously proposed straight-line ROB, which faced opposition.

Additionally, the Ambasamudram Road up to Melapalayam will be upgraded to a four-lane highway at a cost of ₹5 crore, improving regional connectivity.

Healthcare Upgrades:

The Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital will receive a 50-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), enhancing critical healthcare services for the district.

These announcements mark a major push for industrial growth, infrastructure expansion, and environmental sustainability in Tirunelveli.
