State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) has initiated the process of establishing a new industrial park in Thoothukudi. The anchor investor for the venture is Singapore-based Royal Golden Eagle (RGE) Group. Application has been made for environment clearance for the ambitious venture covering an area of 1,967 acres at an estimated cost of ₹667 crore.
This development has come in the wake of an MoU signed between the RGE and the Tamil Nadu government in the year of 2024, promising an investment of ₹4,953 crore in the state. The firm, which is a player in the manufacturing resources around the world, intends to set up a large-scale production facility within the coming park.
According to project documents, RGE’s plans include establishing a Lyocell fiber plant with a capacity of 1.5 lakh tonnes per annum (TPA) and a tissue paper unit capable of producing 50,000 TPA. To support its manufacturing operations, the group will also build a captive cogeneration power plant with three 45 MW units. These facilities will be spread across 345 acres within the proposed industrial estate.
Besides, the area allotted to RGE, the master plan of the Thoothukudi SIPCOT park has earmarked 660 acres for technical textiles. According to officials, this cluster approach will include a larger ecosystem of enterprises involved in the textile and fiber value chain, and further position Tamil Nadu as the hub for the sector.
The park is expected to create direct and indirect employment for around 17,200 people during its operation. Being among the key projects described by state officials as drivers of industrial development in Thoothukudi, it is expected to draw global investments and boost local economic development.
This initiative would further complement Thoothukudi’s already strong topography regarding its port-based industries. The industry watchers note that the combination of large investments, specialized focus on the industries under the textile sector, and the development of infrastructure under SIPCOT can build the district to be a key destination for India’s advanced fiber and technical textile manufacturing.
With the clearance process now underway, the authorities expect work on the new park to begin soon. Apart from that, the government of Tamil Nadu has positioned this project within that larger plan for creating more industrial capacity in the southern districts and employment.
