The Union government has now granted time till December 2025 to complete the Smart City projects in Thiruvananthapuram. The original deadline was March 31, 2025, has been extended to enable the completion of major infrastructure projects such as the renovation of Palayam Connemara Market and Chalai Market and the construction of multi-level car parking (MLCP) facilities at Vaniyamkulam and Putharikandam.

Similarly, the redevelopment of Rajaji Nagar Colony to provide affordable housing is also among the priorities under the extended timeline. The Smart Road projects were already given a two-month extension by the agency supervising them, Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Limited (SCTL). Final road markings and signage provision are the only works left to conclude, and these highways are likely to be ready over the coming days.

The National Smart Cities Mission is expected to approve the December deadline as the city has been asked to complete its pending projects. Thiruvananthapuram has already spent 95 percent of its Smart City money and has been ahead of other states on project execution as well.

Of the major works nearing completion, the MLCP at Putharikandam is to be completed by May, while the redevelopment of Rajaji Nagar Colony will be ready by the end of the year. The renovations of the Chalai and Palayam markets, long-awaited by traders and locals, too are expected to be completed by December. Meanwhile, work on Shanghumugham Beach is almost done as only the shift of vendors to the designated kiosks is pending.

The park is one among the several Smart City projects that have been delivered so far, which also include the renovation of Captain Lakshmi Park and Sree Chitra Park. There will also be pop-up tents and an open-air auditorium at Putharikandam.

With the deadline being extended, the authorities are now hopeful that all the works pending will be completed within the year making urban infrastructure and public amenities in Thiruvananthapuram to the fullest.
