The long-awaited expansion of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is picking up pace, with ₹1,300 crore earmarked for infrastructure upgrades under Project Anantha. The funding is part of a larger $750 million (approx. ₹6,240 crore) external commercial borrowing secured by Adani Airports to develop six airports under its control.

Project Anantha will significantly scale up Terminal 2 from the current 45,000 sq m handling 3.2 million passengers annually to a sprawling 1.65 lakh sq m terminal designed to handle nearly 12 million passengers a year. The upgraded terminal will include a multi-level curb-integrated terminal, an airport plaza, a hotel, commercial and administrative spaces, and expanded car parking facilities.

Another ₹700 crore from the corpus of funds will be utilized to enhance non-aeronautical facilities like retail, food and beverage, duty-free shopping, and other passenger amenities at Adani airports like Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Mangalore, Jaipur, and Guwahati.

Other major upgrades on the anvil for Thiruvananthapuram include a new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, an international cargo complex, and a remote landside check-in facility all geared to boost passenger convenience and operational efficiency.

The economic and planning background, according to Adani Airport Holdings, is already in place while final approvals remain pending. The group has also submitted a long-term ₹3,000 crore masterplan targeting future redevelopment to serve up to 27 million passengers annually by 2034.

The development comes as a major boost for Kerala’s capital city, which has long demanded better airport infrastructure to match its growing passenger traffic and tourism potential.
