Under an agreement with the Australia-based InQuik Group, Tata Steel is bringing modular bridge technology to India to fast-track construction and provide access to infrastructure for areas that are hard to reach.
Under the MoU, Tata Steel will combine its manufacturing capabilities with the patented prefabricated steel formwork system of InQuik. This unique system allows concrete to be poured into steel molds on-site. This reduces the build time and costs through the elimination of various steps involved in old construction methods of bridge building-involving slow construction and lots of equipment.
Weathering and being proof to the vagaries of the terrain, these bridges serve remote areas that are poorly accessed by heavy construction machinery. This innovation coincides well with India’s infrastructure vision to connect the unconnected areas of the country to enable mobility and economic integration.
As per Tata Steel, this collaboration is an important cog in the overall transformation of Tata Steel, from a conventional steel producer into a full-fledged smart and sustainable construction solutions offering, working on speed, efficiency, and robustness of infrastructure project delivery.
The modular bridges bring travel and transport connectivity within a much shorter timeline while sustaining local economies with better access to essential services in the rural hinterlands.
Infrastructure around India appears to require fair growth, and this is one instance of Indian industry borrowing innovations from abroad. This becomes relevant since the government has moved to fast-track infrastructure development for roads, railways, and rural connectivity.
