Tamil Nadu intensifies push to become a leading aerospace and defence manufacturing hub

Tamil Nadu has intensified its efforts to establish itself as one of India’s leading aerospace and defence (A&D) manufacturing destinations, as the state seeks to attract a larger share of investments in one of the country’s fastest-growing industrial sectors.

During an industry interaction organised by the Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor (TNDIC) in Madurai, officials from the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) highlighted the significant growth of India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem. According to officials, the country’s defence production crossed ₹1.54 lakh crore in the previous financial year, while defence exports exceeded ₹38,000 crore, reflecting India’s growing capabilities in indigenous manufacturing and global supply.

With the Central Government targeting ₹3 lakh crore in defence production and ₹50,000 crore in exports by 2029, Tamil Nadu is positioning itself to capture a greater share of future investments across aerospace manufacturing, defence equipment production, precision engineering, electronics, advanced materials and component manufacturing.

The Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor continues to play a key role in supporting this vision by creating a robust ecosystem for defence manufacturers, MSMEs, suppliers, research institutions and technology companies. The corridor has already attracted several domestic and global companies involved in defence production and aerospace engineering.

Officials noted that Tamil Nadu’s well-developed industrial base, skilled workforce, strong engineering ecosystem, world-class ports, airports and logistics infrastructure provide significant advantages for companies looking to expand manufacturing operations in India.

The state government is also increasing its outreach through industry interactions across multiple cities to showcase investment opportunities, encourage technology partnerships and strengthen collaboration between government agencies, industry and academic institutions.

As global supply chains continue to diversify and India focuses on achieving greater self-reliance under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, Tamil Nadu aims to emerge as a preferred destination for high-value aerospace and defence manufacturing.

With policy support, infrastructure development and increasing private sector participation, the state is well positioned to contribute significantly to India’s long-term defence manufacturing ambitions while creating new opportunities for investment, exports, employment and technological innovation.
