Due to rapid urbanisation, Tamil Nadu has now announced a 2,000-acre ‘Global City’ to be developed near Chennai. Led by Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), to offer world-class infrastructure in IT parks, fintech trade zones, R&D centres, high-tech industries, and educational and healthcare facilities.

TN Budget 2025: Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu pointed out during the TN Budget 2025 presentation that cities such as Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Tiruchy, and Madurai are witnessing new highs. They insist that instead of developing urban stretches one by one, we should deploy integrated cities to fulfill public needs most effective way.

This aligns with the Tamil Nadu urban planning strategy. The town CMDA unveiled satellite towns in 2024 at Minjur, Thirumazhisai, Chengalpattu, Mamallapuram, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur. Execution, however, has been a concern due to delays in previous projects, including the Thirumazhisai satellite township.

The ‘Global City’ aims to serve as a growth engine for the economy, be a magnet for investors, and improve the overall quality of urban lifestyle. Work will start in the next financial year but the precise location is not revealed. With Tamil Nadu embracing a sustainable urban future, this ambitious project is getting a lot of attention.
