Tamil Nadu Budget 2025-26: New Airport Planned for Ramanathapuram to Boost Tourism

The Tamil Nadu government today tabled in the Legislative Assembly its Budget for the financial year 2025-26. At the Assembly Hall within the historic Fort St. George complex, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu tabled the budget. The key announcement among these is the state’s progressive vision for enhancing air travel connectivity.

To cater to the rising tourist inflow, the government has proposed a new airport in Ramanathapuram, close to the famous pilgrimage town of Rameswaram. The proposed airport would improve access to this culturally and historically relevant region of the country, which hosts thousands of visitors annually.

“The increasing volume of tourists to Rameswaram has made improved air connectivity imperative. During his Budget speech, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu said: “The new airport in Ramanathapuram will promote hassle-free travel and bolster economic growth in the region.”

Stressing the state government’s commitment to other projects, the minister also reiterated that the Parandur Airport was being expedited. The project, to be located near Chennai, is anticipated to significantly boost Tamil Nadu’s aviation infrastructure.

The state’s plan to grow its airports fits into its larger plan to do so with tourism and economic activity. Tamil Nadu will further consolidate its position as a leading travel and business destination in India and the world, by facilitating air travel and attracting more passengers at domestic and international destinations.
