Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the ₹525 crore Kalaignar International Convention Centre at Muttukadu, East Coast Road. The convention centre, covering 38 acres and 5.12 lakh sq. ft. of built-up area, is poised to free Chennai from its growing requirement for high-capacity event venues.

The new center will feature a 10,000-capacity exhibition hall, a 5,000-capacity conference venue, and a 1,500-seat auditorium. Equipped with central air-conditioning, elevators, EV charging points, and parking facility for more than 3,300 vehicles, the centre will be in a position to accommodate international summits, expos, concerts, and cultural events.”Unlike other event spaces such as YMCA grounds and college campuses that cause congestion in traffic systems, the new centre located at the outskirts of the city will relieve residential areas of congestion,” said a PWD official.
Stalin also opened major infrastructure projects worth ₹499.08 crore during the event. They are:

  • A ₹424.38 crore Malliyakarai to Erode road widening project under the Chennai-Kanyakumari Industrial Corridor with the Asian Development Bank funding.
  • A new ₹68.38 crore Palanganatham flyover in Madurai to reduce traffic at a busy railway crossing.
  • ₹6.32 crore housing for 41 Irular families in Melpakkam, Ranipet, with an Anganwadi, water tank, app facility, and community hall.

Besides, Stalin inaugurated 49 urban infrastructure and water supply schemes worth ₹571.92 crore in Tamil Nadu. The highlights are:

  • ₹188.55 crore for underground drainage systems in Pallikaranai, Mughalivakkam, and Madipakkam.
  • A ₹21 crore bridge at Perungudi.
  • New school buildings, market complexes, sanitation facilities, and coastal beautification works.

He also launched 50 municipal vehicles, from school buses to sanitation trucks, to enhance civic services within the city.
