Southern Railway Begins High-Speed Trial Between Coimbatore and Jolarpettai

Southern Railway has initiated a significant high-speed trial run between Coimbatore and Jolarpettai, marking an important step in improving rail connectivity and travel efficiency across Tamil Nadu. The trial is being carried out to evaluate the performance of upgraded tracks, strengthened bridges, improved signalling systems and enhanced safety infrastructure developed along the 286-kilometre route. This corridor is one of the busiest stretches in the state, especially for passengers travelling between Coimbatore and Chennai, making these upgrades crucial for future operations.

During the trial, officials aim to test speeds of up to 110 km/h, which is expected to provide critical data on track stability, braking performance, traction behaviour and passenger comfort at higher speeds. Based on the success of this trial and the completion of ongoing enhancement works, the Railway Department plans to increase the operational speed to 130 km/h by March 2026. This is being viewed as a major infrastructure push that will support premium services such as the Vande Bharat Express operating on the Coimbatore–Chennai route.

Multiple infrastructure improvements have been carried out along the line to ensure safe high-speed operations. Bridges have been reinforced to withstand higher loads and dynamic forces. Curves have been straightened wherever possible to support smoother movement. Barricades have been installed in vulnerable areas to prevent trespassing, one of the key safety concerns on Indian railway tracks. In addition, the signalling and overhead equipment systems have undergone comprehensive upgrades to meet the needs of high-speed operations.

Once all enhancements are completed, passengers are expected to benefit from a travel time reduction of nearly 20–25 minutes on the Coimbatore–Chennai route. This improvement aligns with Indian Railways’ broader vision of offering faster, safer and more efficient services across key economic corridors. Southern Railway officials have also urged the public to maintain a safe distance from railway tracks during the trial period to avoid accidents and ensure smooth operations.

This high-speed trial marks yet another milestone in Tamil Nadu’s railway modernization efforts and sets the stage for more advanced services in the coming years.
