Chennai-based The Residency Hotels, owned by the Appasamy Group, has announced a major expansion plan with investments exceeding ₹500 crore. The 34-year-old hospitality brand, which currently operates seven hotels across Chennai, Coimbatore, Puducherry, Karur, and Rameswaram, is now entering a new phase of growth by focusing on premium boutique properties and large-scale convention facilities.
In Madurai, the group is developing a 188-room hotel along with a massive convention centre spread across 56,000 sq. ft. The centre will feature one of the largest banquet halls in the region, making it a prime destination for weddings, conferences, and international events. With an investment of over ₹150 crore in the convention space alone, the project is expected to be ready by the first quarter of the next fiscal year.
The company is also expanding into Karnataka with a new 120-room property in Mysuru, slated for completion by April 2027. This move strengthens Residency Hotels’ presence in South India while tapping into Mysuru’s growing tourism and business potential.
Internationally, the group is enhancing its footprint in the Maldives. Its existing property is currently operated under the St. Regis brand by Marriott International, and a second Marriott-managed hotel is now in the pipeline. This signals the company’s intent to move up the value chain and cater to global luxury travelers.
Residency Hotels is also working on a new convention centre in Chennai, adjacent to Residency Towers. With parking for 300 cars, the facility aims to attract large-scale domestic and international gatherings. CEO B. Gopinath emphasized the need for Tamil Nadu to establish a dedicated Convention Bureau, similar to Maharashtra, to compete globally in the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism segment.
With occupancy across its existing hotels ranging between 65% and 80%, The Residency Group is confident that the hospitality sector in India is on a strong growth trajectory. As travelers increasingly seek premium experiences, the group’s strategic expansion in Madurai, Mysuru, and Maldives positions it well to capture rising demand in both leisure and business tourism.
