India’s infrastructure development is moving ahead with a major pipeline of projects under the PM GatiShakti initiative, with 396 infrastructure projects involving an estimated ₹18.66 lakh crore evaluated through the government’s Network Planning Group.

The projects cover multiple ministries and sectors, including roads and railways. According to government data, all 396 projects evaluated through the Network Planning Group mechanism have been sanctioned, while 198 projects are currently under implementation.

Launched on October 13, 2021, PM GatiShakti was designed to bring greater coordination to infrastructure development across the country. The initiative aims to improve connectivity between different modes of transport and reduce logistics costs through integrated planning.

Under the framework, logistics and connectivity infrastructure projects involving investments of more than ₹500 crore are evaluated by the Network Planning Group, commonly known as the NPG. The process allows major projects to be assessed in the context of the wider transport and logistics network rather than as standalone developments.

This approach is increasingly important as India expands its manufacturing and logistics ecosystem. Better coordination between highways, railways, ports and other infrastructure can help improve the movement of raw materials and finished goods between factories, distribution centres and markets.

The government has also highlighted seamless and faster connectivity as a key objective of the GatiShakti initiative. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address from the Red Fort on August 15, emphasised the need to strengthen connectivity across the country.

Industry experts have said that the next phase of India’s logistics transformation should look beyond major cities and ports and consider the entire supply chain, from factories to consumers. Physical infrastructure combined with digital logistics systems can improve shipment visibility, routing and last-mile delivery.

For the 198 projects already under implementation, execution will now be critical. Land acquisition, statutory approvals, tendering, construction and coordination between government agencies will determine how quickly the planned infrastructure becomes operational.

The ₹18.66 lakh crore project pipeline represents a significant opportunity for India’s infrastructure and construction sectors. However, its eventual impact will depend on how effectively these projects improve connectivity, reduce logistics costs and support the movement of goods across the country.
