Ending over a decade of delay, the long outstanding proposal to four-lane the 6.8-km long Pallavaram-Kundrathur road is now gaining momentum. Land acquisition work has started on the project, a major milestone towards reducing daily traffic jams and facilitating connectivity between GST Road and the Chennai-Bengaluru road.

Originally notified for land acquisition nearly 11 years ago, the project had been stalled due to underground drainage (UGD) works and land-related hurdles. With Tambaram Corporation finishing the UGD job, the state has now proceeded with expanding the two-lane section—now 9 to 10 meters wide to a 24-metre-wide four-lane corridor.

The 13-km Pallavaram-Kundrathur-Poonamallee road serves as a vital connector from GST Road to major roads such as Kodambakkam Road, Chennai Bypass, and Outer Ring Road. The 6.8-km stretch under upgradation links Anakaputhur to Kundrathur through Pallavaram and is severely congested with approximately 5,500 passenger car units passing through it every day. Land acquisition is underway in six revenue villages—Pallavaram, Pammal, Anakaputhur, Thirunageswaram, Manjeri, and Kundrathur B. Construction will begin once the process is complete, officials confirmed.

Residents, however, remain skeptical. “If the department had acted in 2014, the road would have been ready now. Political interference and encroachments by roadside shops have slowed progress,” said S Devan, a resident of Anakaputhur.

With the groundwork finally underway, commuters hope this vital arterial road will soon see smoother traffic and improved travel times.
