The bypass road connecting Padur and Thaiyur is nearing completion, with work expected to be finished by mid-May, say officials from the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC).
The bypass, curved nearly in a half-circle shape from Padur to Thaiyur and connecting Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), is already operational with traffic. Finishing touches painting kerb stones, landscaping medians and surrounding earthen lanes, and fitting reflector poles are in progress.
The recently constructed bridge on the bypass, crossing two waterbodies, is complete from a structural perspective with only finishing works remaining.
After opening, the road is likely to substantially decongest traffic on the congested OMR stretch, particularly at choke points such as Kelambakkam. The route is especially likely to relieve weekend bottlenecks between Kovalam and Kelambakkam, a corridor that is often clogged by evening traffic coming back from the East Coast Road.
The project, being executed by TNRDC, is a strategic intervention aimed at streamlining vehicular movement between the southern suburbs of Chennai and key weekend destinations. With the bypass providing alternate access points to and from OMR, smoother traffic dispersal is anticipated.
While the official launch date has not yet been confirmed, ongoing activity on the site suggests that the road will be fully functional soon.
