Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is trying to complete the construction of a new 205-meter-long bridge over Okkiyam Maduvu in Pallikaranai, before the northeast monsoon begins, to help some inflow and prevent flooding in this low-lying area.

The new bridge would be built with more than twice the length of the existing 90-meter length, with an increase of clear vertical height by 1.5 to allow for unhindered flow of water during rains. The floods during Cyclone Michaung in December 2023 made the need for an upgraded structure more pressing due to low clearance and restricted waterway of the existing bridge.

Construction began in August 2024, after consultations held between CMRL, the Tamil Nadu government, and the Water Resources Department (WRD). Major milestones, according to CMRL, have already been accomplished; the steel bridge has been fabricated, while casting of deck slabs for three 40-meter spans has been completed on both upstream and downstream sides of the existing bridge.

“Currently, we have expanded the waterway from 90 meters to 120 meters. The total bridge length will be 205 meters upon completion of the last two spans,” the statement said. The area on the upstream side is completely cleared, while 80% on the downstream side has been made ready.

Approach spans that will connect the new bridge to the existing road network are also under construction. This bridge will be an important transport link as well as a flood-mitigation measure for the residents of Pallikaranai and adjoining areas.

“We are working 24-7 to have the Okkiyam Maduvu bridge ready before the monsoon,” said CMRL Managing Director M.A. Siddique. “This project will facilitate water flow, reduce flooding risk, and in the long run, the people around the marshland will get relief.”

The Okkiyam Maduvu bridge is a critical segment in Chennai’s stormwater management, and its early intentional completion has been ensured by officials to prepare the city better for the ensuing extreme weather events.
