NTPC has introduced its groundbreaking ‘Sukh’ Eco-house at the India International Trade Fair (IITF) 2024 in New Delhi. Designed for affordability and sustainability, the houses are constructed using approximately 80% ash and ash-based materials from thermal power plants, marking a significant step toward eco-friendly rural housing.

These innovative homes employ interlocking ash-based wall blocks, eliminating the need for sand, cement, steel, or mortar. This reduces costs, shortens construction time, and minimizes environmental impact. A 30-square-meter house, including a drawing room, bedroom, kitchen, and toilet, can be built in just 15-20 days for Rs 1.5 lakh. The material’s durability has been validated through over two years of exposure to harsh weather, such as rain and high winds.

NTPC’s approach achieves a 75% reduction in carbon emissions compared to conventional construction methods. The ash-based materials replace natural aggregates, preventing topsoil erosion while cutting down on cement use. Remarkably, these structures can be dismantled and reassembled with minimal damage, enhancing their utility and longevity.

Aligned with the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), the eco-houses provide a scalable model for rural housing, addressing waste management by repurposing industrial byproducts. Additionally, these homes can integrate solar energy systems, reinforcing India’s Net Zero commitments and promoting self-sufficient housing solutions.

NTPC’s initiative not only exemplifies sustainable construction but also addresses affordable housing needs, paving the way for eco-friendly practices in rural development. By rethinking waste management and prioritizing environmental sustainability, the ‘Sukh’ Eco-house sets a benchmark for zero-carbon emission living spaces.

  • Sir,nice initiative by NTPC. NTPC in all their township they can establish solid waste management scheme. daily waste shall be collected & by using incinerator, ash will be residue and waste will be disposed. So that this ash also can be useful in building works or preparing any other products like paver block etc.
