State-run mining giant NMDC Limited owns NMDC Steel Limited, its wholly-owned subsidiary, and its crude steel production in the financial year 2024-25 crossed 2 million metric tons (mt) in its first full year of operations.

This fiscal year, full-scale operations commenced at its new facility to manufacture steel, with a design capacity of 3 million metric tons per year in Chhattisgarh. For the same month last year, the company produced 966468 mt of crude steel when the plant was running for nine months. The output for this year nearly doubles that number, illustrating the ramp-up of operations.

Apart from crude steel production, NMDC Steel sold a record 1.45 million mt of hot rolled coils and plates during the year, underscoring robust offtake and enhanced market footprint.

The accomplishment marks a growing tide for India’s public sector in the steel industry and central India as NMDC’s foray into steelmaking is viewed as a strategic extension of the company’s mining operations. The company’s performance is a result of improved production capabilities and rising demand for steel products in both domestic and export markets.

The milestone comes amid a surge in India’s steel demand, fueled by infrastructure and industrial growth. The output from NMDC Steel will further bolster the country’s endeavor towards self-reliance in critical industrial inputs.

NMDC Steel currently sets its focus on becoming a new contender alongside its rivals in India’s steel industry, now that its 3 million mt facility is live. While the company has not yet announced its guidance for the next fiscal period, the current performance has created a good basis for continued growth.

This milestone is an integral part of NMDC’s diversification plans for integrating into the steel value chain.
