The already extensive Metro network in Chennai is about to get a significant expansion with the completion of a new 21.76 km stretch between Koyambedu and Pattabiram (Outer Ring Road). Proposed by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the ₹9,744 crore project will enhance connectivity to several key residential and industrial localities.

This extension, part of Corridor 5 (Madhavaram – Sholinganallur), was included in the Detailed Project Report (DPR) submitted to the government. It will pass through areas including Padi Pudhu Nagar, Mogappair, Ambattur, Thirumullaivoyal and Avadi, and reach Pattabiram (ORR). There will be a total of 19 stations constructed along this stretch.

A major highlight of this project is combining three important flyovers which will bring down costs and the peak construction time. These flyovers will be at:

Ambattur Industrial Estate Bus Terminus Jn.

Junction at ambattur-vanangaram road

Avadi Bus Terminus to Avadi-Mount Poonamallee Road Junction

This Metro line is likely to improve connectivity to some of the ongoing Metro lines and major transport hubs such as Ambattur Estate Terminus, Ambattur OT, Avadi Railway Station, Avadi Bus Terminus and Outer Ring Road (ORR).

“Integration of Metro stations with key highway flyovers at crossing points like Dunlop and Avadi Bus Stand would significantly improve the flow of traffic, and the proposed convergence also aims at completing the project by linking up intermodal points,” a CMRL press release said.

This extension once operational will provide a lot of benefits to the commuters by reducing the travel time and easing congestion in some of the busiest corridors of Chennai. The proposal is expected to go under government review soon, clearing the way for construction to begin.
