Kerala Approves Phase 1 of Thiruvananthapuram Metro Project to Transform Urban Mobility

In a significant step toward modernizing Kerala’s transport infrastructure, the state government has approved the Phase 1 alignment of the Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail project. This milestone marks a major advancement in the state capital’s urban mobility plan, promising to decongest traffic and enhance connectivity for thousands of daily commuters.

The 31-km Phase 1 corridor, to be implemented by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL), will play a pivotal role in reshaping Thiruvananthapuram’s public transport network. The approved route will connect key locations including Technopark’s three phases, the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, Thampanoor bus terminal, Central Railway Station, Secretariat, and the Medical College. With 27 proposed stations stretching from Pappanamcode to Eanchakkal, the corridor aims to link the city’s major commercial and administrative zones, bringing greater accessibility to its residents.

KMRL has also been entrusted with constructing flyovers at critical traffic points Sreekaryam, Ulloor, and Pattom to further streamline vehicular movement and complement the metro’s operations. These supporting projects are expected to alleviate existing traffic bottlenecks, ensuring smoother travel across the city.

The Thiruvananthapuram Metro project reflects Kerala’s commitment to developing a sustainable, eco-friendly urban transport model. Much like the success story of the Kochi Metro and the innovative Kochi Water Metro, the upcoming Thiruvananthapuram Metro is set to deliver cleaner, faster, and more efficient mobility solutions for both residents and visitors.

By connecting major IT hubs such as Technopark, along with administrative and transport centers, the project is expected to significantly boost economic activity, attract investments, and enhance the overall quality of life in the capital city. The initiative also aligns with the state’s broader vision of promoting sustainable development and reducing vehicular pollution through mass rapid transit systems.

Once operational, the Thiruvananthapuram Metro will redefine the way the capital commutes connecting people, opportunities, and communities while setting a new benchmark for Kerala’s urban transformation.
