Construction work on the Kalaignar International Convention Centre at Muttukadu, near Chennai, has gathered significant momentum, with the superstructure phase now progressing rapidly. The ambitious ₹525-crore project, one of Tamil Nadu’s flagship infrastructure initiatives, aims to transform Chennai into a global hub for large-scale conventions and international events.

Spread across 37.99 acres along East Coast Road, the convention centre will feature state-of-the-art facilities to host global summits, exhibitions, and cultural programmes. The project, implemented by the Public Works Department (PWD), is expected to ease congestion in Chennai’s core city areas by offering a dedicated venue outside the urban zone.

According to PWD officials, nearly 700 workers are engaged in the project’s execution. The site now has visible progress with superstructure construction in full swing following the relocation of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited’s casting yard from the premises. Officials confirmed that the roof truss fabrication has been completed, and ornamental works including the entrance arch and traditional stapathi designs are also underway.

Once completed, the world-class facility will house a 91,924 sq.ft exhibition hall capable of accommodating 10,000 people, a convention hall for 5,000 participants, and an auditorium with banquet facilities for 1,500 guests. The two-level complex will include modern amenities such as a cafeteria, dining area, medical centre, disaster management room, and disabled-friendly access.

To ensure sustainability, the PWD plans to install a solar power facility, develop green landscaped zones, and construct a sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 800 kilolitres per day. Adequate parking space for 1,706 cars and 1,700 two-wheelers will also be available.

With about 20% of the work completed, officials are confident that the project will be finished within 18 months. Once operational, the Kalaignar International Convention Centre is expected to become one of South India’s most iconic venues, boosting Chennai’s stature as a leading destination for international conferences, trade fairs, and cultural events.
