India Approves $9.18B Greenfield Port in Maharashtra

The Indian government has approved a substantial investment of $9.18 billion to construct a greenfield all-weather port in Maharashtra, the western state of India. According to an official government statement released on Friday, June 21, this new port will play a pivotal role in the India-Middle East-East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEEC), a strategic trade route aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic ties across these regions.

The proposed port will be situated at Vadhavan in Maharashtra and will feature a natural depth of 20 meters, allowing it to accommodate large vessels. It is designed to handle an impressive capacity of 23.3 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) containers per year, significantly boosting India’s port infrastructure and capacity to manage international trade.

In addition to the primary investment, an additional $482 million has been allocated to develop road and rail linkages between the port and its hinterland. These connectivity projects are crucial for ensuring smooth and efficient transportation of goods to and from the port, thereby enhancing its operational efficiency and integration with other logistical networks.

The construction of the port will be executed in two phases. The first phase is scheduled to be operational by 2030, while the second phase is expected to be completed by 2039. This phased approach allows for progressive scaling of the port’s capabilities, aligning with anticipated growth in trade volumes and economic activities in the region.

The Vadhavan port is envisioned as the main feeder port of the IMEEEC, a critical component in the broader strategy to facilitate cargo movement along this new economic corridor. The port is expected to propel cargo traffic to the Chabahar port in Iran and further integrate with the International North-South Corridor, a major trade route connecting India with Russia and Europe through Iran.
