India Launches Anti-Dumping Probe into Stainless Steel Imports from China, Indonesia, and Vietnam

India has initiated an anti-dumping investigation into imports of cold-rolled stainless steel flat products of the 300 and 400 series from China, Indonesia, and Vietnam, following complaints from the domestic industry. The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), under the Ministry of Commerce, announced the probe after receiving a petition filed by the Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA) on behalf of local manufacturers.

According to the petition, cheap imports of stainless steel products from these countries have been causing material injury to Indian producers by undercutting domestic prices. The ISSDA has sought the imposition of anti-dumping duties to create a level playing field for the domestic industry. The DGTR, after examining the prima facie evidence, stated that it found sufficient grounds to begin a formal investigation into the alleged dumping practices.

The investigation will assess the extent of dumping, its impact on local producers, and whether it has led to significant financial stress in the domestic stainless steel sector. If the findings confirm that the imports have harmed Indian manufacturers, the DGTR may recommend imposing anti-dumping duties on these products. The final decision, however, rests with the Ministry of Finance.

India has frequently used anti-dumping measures to counter unfair trade practices and protect its industries from cheap imports. Over the years, duties have been imposed on various products ranging from steel and chemicals to consumer goods. This latest move highlights India’s continuing efforts to safeguard its manufacturing sector, which is vital for infrastructure development and economic growth.

The DGTR is also currently investigating dumping in other product categories, including wallpapers, borosilicate glassware, nylon products, and medical examination gloves imported from Malaysia and Thailand.
