Hindalco Industries Ltd., part of the Aditya Birla Group, has been named the world’s top sustainable aluminium company in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) for the fifth consecutive year. The company scored 87 points in the 2024 rankings, a nine-point improvement over 2023, surpassing its closest competitor by 22 points.

The Dow Jones Sustainability World Index includes the top 10% of companies by market capitalisation in the S&P Global Broad Market Index, assessed on economic and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) standards. Hindalco’s score reflects its 100th-percentile achievements across climate strategy, resource efficiency, community involvement, and operational eco-efficiency. Key initiatives include a 100 MW carbon-free power project in Odisha, which earned an “Energy Transition Changemaker” award at COP28.

Satish Pai, Managing Director, attributed Hindalco’s success to its commitment to ESG goals, citing strides in biodiversity, water positivity, and waste management. The company recycled 85% of operational waste in FY24, and three units earned zero-waste-to-landfill certification. Hindalco also reduced specific GHG emissions by 19.54% from the FY 2011-12 baseline and aims to derive 30% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.

In the social dimension, Hindalco scored 89%, investing ₹154 crore in community initiatives that benefited 2.5 million people in 2023-24. Governance efforts earned an 84% score, 12 points higher than its closest peer, underscoring its leadership in ESG commitments.
