The Government of India’s decision to reduce the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on cement from 28% to 18% has been hailed as a landmark reform by the South Indian Cement Manufacturers’ Association (SICMA). The association expressed its appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, describing the move as a decisive step that will reshape India’s housing and infrastructure sectors.

Cement is the backbone of the construction industry, and lowering its tax rate has long been a demand across industries. With this reform, construction costs are expected to decline, directly benefiting individual home builders, affordable housing projects, and large-scale public infrastructure initiatives. For millions aspiring to own a home, the decision translates into greater affordability and wider access.

SICMA emphasized that this reduction will not only support the Government’s Housing for All mission but also promote balanced growth across urban and rural India. Affordable housing projects, in particular, will see a major push as developers can pass on cost benefits to buyers, thereby stimulating demand.

From an industry perspective, the revised GST rate is poised to boost competitiveness, attract new investments, and generate employment. By making cement more affordable, the measure also strengthens the real estate sector and supports ongoing infrastructure projects critical to nation-building. SICMA highlighted that the reform demonstrates the Government’s recognition of cement as a core input for India’s growth story.

Furthermore, the tax cut reduces compliance burdens and improves operational efficiency, encouraging greater formal sector participation. This aligns well with India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, fostering self-reliance and inclusive development.

SICMA, representing leading cement manufacturers in South India, reaffirmed its full support for the implementation of the revised GST structure. The association pledged to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure the benefits of this progressive measure are realized across the economy.

In conclusion, the GST reduction on cement is not merely a tax reform—it is a catalyst for housing, infrastructure, and industrial growth. By addressing long-standing concerns, the Government has delivered a reform that promises far-reaching impact on India’s development journey.
