Tiruppur, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore and Hosur will get ring roads to ease congestion, cut pollution and improve connectivity in these industrial and commercial hubs, Tamil Nadu Road Development Corporation (TNRDC) said. The corporation would select consultants to prepare project-wise detailed feasibility reports for these projects.

These are already cities with well-developed road and rail networks, according to TNRDC officials. But an increase in the volume of traffic, coupled with the lack of bypasses at a lot of places to ease congestion has led to digressions on this route. However, the introduced ring roads will begin to resolve these issues successfully.

Tiruppur: The ‘Textile Capital’ Breathe a Sigh of Relief

The heavy traffic on NH-381, SH-196 and SH-19 has turned into a nightmare for motorists in Tiruppur, the city’s textile hub. Without a bypass, vehicles face long wait times.p The new proposed outer ring road will help ease traffic as well as the city.

Western Ring Road under construction in Coimbatore

Work on the Western Ring Road in Coimbatore, measuring 32.43 km, is already underway by the state highways department. The road will link Mylkal on the Salem-Cochin Road (SHU 52) to Narasimhanaickenpalayam on the Nagapattinam-Gudalur-Mysore Road (NH67). The project’s three-phase plan includes:

  • Phase 1: Madukkarai–Madhampatti (11.80 km)
  • Phase 2 – Madhampatti to Kanuvai (12.1 km)
  • Phase 3: Kanuvai–Narasimhanaickenpalayam (8.52 km)

The first phase, whose construction began in August 2023, will cost ₹250 crore and is expected to take till September 2025 to complete. The second and third phases are expected to be taken over by the TNRDC.

Tirunelveli: Traffic Diversion on Major Highways

The 31-km long Tirunelveli Ring Road is proposed to divert traffic on four major state highways — SH-41, SH-39, SH-41A and SH-40 — from the city. The 12.2 km Suthamalli to Konganthanparai Vilakku portion is already under construction in phase I and the balance phases will be handled by the TNRDC.

Feasibility Study Underway in Hosur

In Hosur, TNRDC will carry out a feasibility study for a ring road between Zuzuvadi and Perandapalli. As part of this project, the connectivity of the city will improve and the movement of traffic will be smooth.

Once completed, these projects are expected to enhance traffic management tremendously in the important cities of Tamil Nadu and motivate the economic activities in the respective cities.
