State Highways Department’s National Highways (NH) wing will conduct a feasibility study for the extension of the 450 m Saibaba Colony flyover along Mettupalayam Road in Coimbatore. This was in response to increasing requests from residents, motorists and several groups, including AIADMK’s Council Floor Leader Prabhakaran, to extend the flyover to Avinashilingam University, adjacent to the District Forest Office.
10 Pillars Have Been Completed Of Saibaba Colony Flyover Construction Update Local officials expect it to be finished by the end of this year. But as the project takes shape, many local, tourists going to Nilgiris, and city leaders have demanded that it be extended to improve traffic flow and connectivity.
Public Works Department (PWD) and Highways Minister EV Velu addressed the issue during a visit to Coimbatore recently and ensured that requisite action would be taken. As part of this, NH officials have been tasked to conduct a feasibility study to see if the flyover can be extended further down Mettupalayam Road to benefit a wider spectrum of commuters.
A senior office bearer from the NH wing said that a study was being conducted to look at multiple options to extend the flyover to Avinashilingam University. A separate Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared for the extension project, which is being taken up in the next financial year (2025-2026).
Approved, this extension will not only reduce traffic congestion for those travelling to the Nilgiris but also make daily commuting in that part of the country easier.
