Taking a firm step forward in pursuing infrastructure development in the southern region, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) held a high-level review on May 28, 2025, aimed at expediating stalled mega projects in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

The PMG meet, presided over by Principal Economic Advisor at DPIIT, discussed 18 key issues holding back nine infrastructure projects worth more than ₹49,040 crore. The target: break bureaucratic impediments, particularly those relating to inter-ministerial clearance, land acquisition, and forest clearance.

One of the key projects in the focus segment was the ₹17,320-crore Irugur to Devangonthi Multi-Product Pipeline in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The project passes through Coimbatore, Namakkal, Salem, and Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu, and Kolar and Bengaluru Rural in Karnataka. Delays due to land acquisition and forest clearances in Tamil Nadu were ranked as priority areas for resolution.

The session also saw Reliance Jio’s 4G/5G expansion plan for improving digital connectivity in geographically remote and strategically sensitive locations, such as areas like Siachen. Issues of regulatory bottlenecks involving wildlife and forest clearances were deliberated in consultation with state governments.

DPIIT’s move is an indication of the Centre’s increasing zeal to expedite infrastructure projects that are key to economic development and regional integration. The PMG platform is aimed at clustering different ministries and state authorities to streamline hurdles, particularly for projects of national significance.

The review is a thrust by the central government to see that there is timely implementation of major projects, more so in high industrial potential states. The investments are to the tune of tens of thousands of crores. These infrastructure development projects are to improve logistics, power distribution, and digital infrastructure in major southern corridors.
