The second stage of the highway round project is finally going to be set into action, which is intended to ease the traffic congestion in Coimbatore by keeping the non-essential vehicles away from the city roads. The construction will probably start in September 2025.

The first phase of the project, 11.8 km-long sections, is closing down from Mylkal to Madampatti and is expected to be completed by the end of August or the early part of September. To move forward, the Highways Department has submitted a proposal seeking ₹368 crore from the state government to implement the second phase, which will span 12.54 km from Madampatti to Kanuvai via West Chithiraichavadi, Kalikkanaickenpalayam, Vadavalli, and Somayampalayam.

An official from the Highways Department confirmed that 90% of land acquisition for Phase II is complete, with the route passing through predominantly agricultural land. “Once the state clears the proposal, we’ll begin clearing the site with earthmovers. The new Tamil Nadu State Highways Authority will supervise the execution of the remaining two phases,” the official added.

The second phase will include 40 culverts, small bridges, and three vehicular underpasses. Administrative sanction from the state government is awaited before works can begin.

The Department, at the moment, is drafting the proposal for Phase III: the last leg of the Project, which involves constructing approximately 8.09 km of road from Kanuvai to Narasimmanaickenpalayam at an estimated cost of ₹220 crore. This phase is proposed to have 24 culverts, minor bridges and two vehicular underpasses.

Earlier, the state had sanctioned ₹250 crore for Phase I, which is currently being expedited.

Once completed, the Western Ring Road will significantly ease congestion in Coimbatore. Vehicles traveling to Ooty from Palakkad Road will no longer need to enter the city and can instead bypass it entirely, traveling from Mylkal to Narasimmanaickenpalayam via the ring road for a faster and smoother journey.
