The city corporation has begun work on a survey to widen Sathyamangalam Road (NH 948) for the Metro Rail project, and work has already commenced to widen the road up to Sathyamangalam.
Currently, a 1.2 km stretch from Textool Bridge to Old Ganapathy Road is being evaluated as part of Phase I. They are mapping the land and underground utilities like drinking water pipelines, underground drainage (UGD) pipes, gas pipelines, network cables and electricity lines.
“Previously, a 20-metre-wide survey was done for the National Highways Department’s road widening,” said a senior corporation official. But we started surveying for a 30-meter stretch on both sides of the road now with the Metro Rail project underway. The survey is likely to be completed in a month and will be submitted to the State government.”
The utility mapping survey at Ukkadam Bus Stand, in addition to the one at Sathyamangalam Road, suggests that the governance was initiated on several fronts to ensure infrastructure readiness.
Because of the significance of the project, the CMRL has given ₹2 crore to the Coimbatore Corporation to conduct the survey.
After the survey is completed, major stakeholders like the Highways Department, CMRL, Coimbatore Corporation and Public Works Department will study the report and discuss the next steps.
