Coimbatore is set for a grand urban overhaul with a slew of infrastructure projects that seek to transform the city’s cultural, recreational, and commercial activities. The Tamil Nadu state government has declared plans worth billions of rupees, targeting parks and gardens, knowledge centers, and sports complexes.

The most ambitious of the ventures is the Rs. 161 crore Semmozhi Poonga eco-park, 75% completed. Spread over 45 acres where the old central prison structure in Gandhipuram was located, the eco-park will have 22 theme gardens, an open-air stadium, and a couple of recreation areas, and will be a viable urban green lung.

Also in the works is the Rs. 300 crore Thanthai Periyar Library and Science Centre in Anupparpalayam. The eight-story, 10-acre complex will accommodate over 100,000 books and science displays. The January 2026 opening library will be one of the key educational facilities in the area.

The sports infrastructure of the city is also coming up, with a new 30,000-capacity cricket stadium in Ondipudur and a state-of-the-art hockey stadium in RS Puram, both ready by April 2026. These will make Coimbatore a sports tourism hub and a talent reserve.

Apart from these initiatives, the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation, in partnership with CREDAI Coimbatore, is pursuing the development of the city airport. Suggested developments include upgraded terminals and runway facilities, with the vision to enhance connectivity and future-proof Coimbatore.

All these projects are estimated to enhance the quality of life, enhance tourism, and enhance economic growth, all set for Coimbatore to be a modern urban city.
