Coimbatore’s Avinashi Road Flyover Named After Industrial Genius G. D. Naidu

In a landmark move celebrating one of India’s greatest industrial minds, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has named Coimbatore’s 10.1 km-long Avinashi Road flyover after G. D. Naidu, widely recognized as the “Edison of India” and the “Miracle Man” of Coimbatore. This flyover, the longest in Tamil Nadu, represents a significant milestone in urban transportation and city infrastructure.

Originally announced in 2020, construction progress was slow, with only 5% of work completed by May 2021. Recognizing its importance for Coimbatore’s connectivity, the state government took responsibility to expedite the project. The remaining 95% was completed at a cost of Rs 1,791 crore, highlighting a commitment to quality and timely delivery.

Stretching from Uppilipalayam near the police quarters to Goldwins near Chinniyampalayam, the flyover traverses the busy Avinashi Road corridor, a key arterial route in Coimbatore. Designed with multiple entry and exit ramps at major junctions like Anna Silai, Nava India, Peelamedu, and the airport, the flyover aims to streamline traffic flow and reduce congestion significantly. While seven ramps are operational, one near PRS Grounds is temporarily withheld due to a legal dispute.

The project integrates several modern safety and environmental features. Roller crash barriers enhance commuter safety, while around 4,500 bougainvillea and golden cypress plants along the flyover ensure greenery in the urban landscape. A drip irrigation system, supported by 13 borewells, maintains these plants efficiently. Sprinklers and 220 rainwater harvesting structures further reinforce sustainable water management and groundwater recharge.
