To improve transportation for residents from the suburbs towards Chennai, CMRL (Chennai Metro Rail Limited) is planning a new metro line between Koyambedu and Pattabiram. The work will be conducted from Koyambedu up to Avadi and will ultimately reach Pattabiram, for which a complete plan will be submitted to the Tamil Nadu government by February 2025.

The proposed metro line will be about 19 km long, and the detailed project report (DPR) will outline the proposed metro line. The stations on the line will be at Koyambedu, Padi Pudhu Nagar, Park Road, Vavin, Ambattur Estate bus stand, Dunlop, Ambattur railway station, Ambattur OT bus stand, Thirumulaivoyal, Avadi, and Pattabiram. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs. 6,300 crores.

Apart from the metro line, the depot will come up just after Pattabiram to facilitate all operations. “CMRL has already conducted a site inspection, and the final report is due by February”, officials said.

This new metro extension has been the answer to increasing grievances from people staying in Avadi, Ambattur, and Pattabiram, who feel they are still not part of the metro’s expansion process in the city. People have expressed grievances over the existing modes of transportation and some have cited long, grueling commutes to the heart of Chennai city. Avadi resident Shalini described how her daily round-trip four-hour commute was the reason for her resignation.

A resident of Pattabiram feels that better transport infrastructure is needed and though Tidel Park opened its doors to the public, metro connectivity still has a long way to go in the region. He points out that while there are new jobs are being generated in the suburbs, public transport is still woefully inadequate.

Traffic congestion in areas such as Avadi, Pattabiram, and Thirumullaivoyal has become serious ones again emphasizing how there is a dire need for enhanced infrastructure to allow the added people and lighten the pressure upon the present networks of roads In this sense, this new metro project serves as a meaningful step forward in relieving these problems of mobility.
