Chennai to Get Smoother Commutes as GCC Plans Major Road Upgrade Across 14 Zones

In a major push to enhance urban infrastructure, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has rolled out an ambitious plan to upgrade 346 roads across the city’s 14 zones. The project, set to be implemented under the Special Fund for the 2025–26 financial year, carries a total estimated cost of ₹92.74 crore.

The large-scale initiative will target both interior roads and major bus routes, with upgrades planned using cement concrete, bituminous tar, and interlocking paver technology to suit the specific needs of each area.

To ensure efficiency and prevent delays often caused by assigning large zones to single contractors, GCC officials have divided the work into 21 distinct packages. This strategic move is expected to help maintain timelines and improve overall project execution.

Tenders have already been issued, and officials expect work orders to be finalized by the end of May. Among the first to be taken up is Package-1, which will focus on 24 roads across Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, and Royapuram. Similarly, Package-2 and Package-3 will cover areas in Anna Nagar and Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar, with each set costing around ₹4.35 crore and ₹4.53 crore respectively.

A top official of the GCC’s Bus Route Roads Department stressed that the roadworks by a long-term plan aimed at enhancing the commuter experience and strengthening the city’s resistance to monsoon-induced wear and tear.

“This is not just about surface upgrades,” the official said. “We’re taking a comprehensive approach to ensure roads last longer and provide smoother, safer travel for all users.”

The upgrade plan comes at a time when Chennai continues to strive to give its infrastructure a modern face while working to combat the day-to-day issues that come with the growing urban population. With residents hoping for fewer potholes and better rides, the city moves yet another step closer to becoming a more livable and commuter-friendly city.
